Today, the Owl's had a Math Workshop. Our focus for this workshop was two-dimensional geometric shapes. Friends examined different attributes of a square, circle, rectangle and triangle. After learning about each shape, friends were given six popsicle sticks and were asked to make a square, triangle and a rectangle. Once our square, triangle and rectangle were made, friends were asked to make a circle with their popsicle sticks. Friends tried and tried but just could not make the sticks turn into circle. Some friends suggested that they could bend the sticks; other friends thought they should use less sticks, which still didn't solve our problem! Danielle suggested that they should think of how they write the letters of the alphabet (the not so straight letters). This made a light bulb go off and all the Owls' screamed with excitement, "WE NEED A CURVE!" Needless to say our problem was solved!
Samantha read us a book about shapes and their different attributes. Once the story was finished, friends split into four different groups where they could practice working with the different shapes.
At the first center, friends were given a square, triangle, rectangle and circle and were asked to trace the different shapes.
At the second center, friends were asked to use the popsicle sticks to form a square, triangle and rectangle.
At the third center, friends were given different size wedges to see if they could form them into circles.
Finally at the last center, friends used the different shapes to make one big picture!
Each Owl got a chance to explore each area. Friends ended our shape workshop with a silly poem about a square. Ask your Owl if they remember the difference between a square and a rectangle.
